Field notes · Nº 02 Judgment

The best plan begins with a list of places you refuse to go.

A topographic contour map on cream paper; one area is hatched in gold and labelled 'No-go zone', and a dashed route curves around it, labelled 'The route that remains'. Headline: 'Know how you would lose, and winning gets simple.' Pallav Sharma.

Asking how to win scatters a team across competing ideas. Charlie Munger asked the opposite: “All I want to know is where I’m going to die, so I’ll never go there.”

Munger’s question is easier to answer, and its answers are concrete.
Unclear ownership.
Too many priorities.
Slow decisions on choices you could easily reverse.

Remove those, and the plan needs far less brilliance.

Run this check before every major plan. It turns a vague ambition into a short list of things the team will never do.

Know how you would lose, and winning gets simple.
